In San Giuseppe Jato in the heart of Palermo Sicily, visitors to the area are treated to the sight of old, gnarled olive trees clinging to steep mountain slopes the trees silhouettes casting long shadows in the afternoon sunlight. This is the scenery that greeted owner Vincent S. Di Piazza and his parents when visiting their family home in San Giuseppe this past summer. Both mom and dad were raised in San Giuseppe. We learned that a childhood friend of my fathers, Mimmo Simonetti, was the owner of one of those gorgeous olive groves. He and his family have been producing this fine, elegant olive oil for many years, an oil that is revered in Italy but unknown in the United States. The excellent products produced in San Giuseppe rarely reach the United States so we thought it would be wonderful to bring a piece of our familys Italian home back to share with you. Warm daytime temperatures and bright, high altitude sunlight combine with chilly evenings to produce an olive oil of exceptional quality. Cerasuola olives are blended with small amounts of biancolilla and nocellara del belice olives to produce a very fine oil with a buttery mellowness that bursts with the fresh flavor of just-crushed olives.
